Named after the Chesapeake Bay, where it was originally bred and used, this dog is sturdy and athletic in appearance. It has a large head and muscular neck. Its fur is some shade of brown. The outer coat is coarse and the undercoat is short and wool-like. This dog stands 21 to 26 inches and weighs 55 to 80 pounds.

Temperament

This is a devoted dog that is always ready to work. It is extremely hardy and is known for its amazing endurance, even in freezing conditions. It has an oily coat that resists water penetration allowing this breed to work in ice-cold water year round. This breed is readily trainable to a number of different jobs and is an incredible swimmer.
