General Appearance

The Chow Chow is a long-haired, spitz-type dog. It has a black tongue and a large, heavy head. This dog is lion-like in appearance. The Chow comes in a variety of solid colors, which include: black, red, blue, fawn, and white. It stands 18 to 22 inches at the shoulder and weighs 50 to 70 pounds.

Temperament

The Chow is a strong-willed dog often described as aloof and reserved. The Chow is affectionate and loyal to its family, however it is distrustful of new people. This breed is characteristically un-playful and not particularly active. The Chow is relatively healthy, but it is susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia. It lives between 10 and 15 years.

Is a Chow Chow Puppy Right for You?

The Chow can happily live in any home and is suitable for small apartments as long as it gets walked daily. However, the coat of this breed requires regular brushing. Additionally, the Chow is more difficult to train than most types of dogs. However, it does require plenty of training and socialization.
