General Appearance
The Dachshund is easily recognized by its very long body and short legs. It is low to the ground and has a long, level back. The Dachshund comes in three coat varieties: the smooth coat, wire coat, and long coat. Dachshund have the most colors of all breeds. There are 2 weight groups (3 in the UK), miniatures (under 11 lbs.) and standard size dachshunds (16 to 32 lbs.).
Temperament
The Dachshund is an intelligent breed. It is lively, affectionate, and often mischievous. It is said to have a great sense of humor. It is a relatively healthy breed, however because it has a long back, it is prone to slipped disks if it becomes overweight.
Is a Dachshund Puppy Right for You?
The Dachshund is in the hound group with strong scenting instincts, and it is a capable vermin hunter. It will likely chase small animals in the yard, and might dig holes. It also has a propensity for barking. It is one of the most popular breeds in the US and does make a good family dog. However, it can be snappy toward strangers, and proper introductions are necessary, especially with children. Regular exercise is essential to keep the Dachshund from putting on extra weight.
