General Appearance

The Otterhound, as its name suggests, was deployed to hunt otters in England. Today it is mostly used as a companion dog. However, it still has the athletic body of a hunter. It has a rather scraggly looking coat that allows it to swim in the coldest of waters. Its long ears, face, and tail all have lots of fur. Its feet are webbed; its jaws are strong. This is a large breed, which stands 24 to 26 inches and weighs between 65 and 115 pounds.

Temperament

The Otterhound is friendly, energetic, and quite intelligent. It has long been used to hunt in packs, so it gets along very well with other dogs and people. However, it was bred to stand up to otters, so it can be quite ferocious in a fight. This is a relatively healthy breed, although it does sometimes suffer from hip dysplasia.

Is an Otterhound Puppy Right for You?

The Otterhound makes a great family dog. It likes exercise and is particularly fond of swimming. Its coat needs to be brushed and occasionally stripped. The Otterhound does best with a large fenced yard. If kept in an unfenced yard, it will likely go off hunting on its own.
