Sarplaninac Puppies for Sale
Are you looking for Sarplaninac puppies for sale? Read below to learn more about this powerful flock guard.
General Appearance
The Sarplaninac (Sharplanina) FCI registry name, or Yugoslav Sheepdog (also known as the Deltari Illir) is an ancient and probably the oldest breed in the Balkans. It is a large working dog long used to guard sheep in the rugged Sarplanina Mountains. The Sar has a powerfully built frame and a thick grey colored coat capable of withstanding severe elements. Its tail is long and bushy. Its head and jaws are powerful, and its teeth are quite large. Sarplaninacs stand 22 to 24 inches and can weigh upwards of 120 pounds.
Temperament
The Sarplaninac is calm and even tempered most of the time. However, it is a born guardian and will take on predators that stray into its territory. Additionally, the Sar generally worked independently in the mountains, and so this dog breed is quite independent and willful. As a result, training will seem more difficult, and Sarplaninac puppies should be trained from an early age.
Is a Sarplaninac Puppy Right for You?
The Sar can make an excellent family pet, but it is best suited for those in rural settings with plenty of open space. It is a natural flock guard and will protect livestock against any predator, which makes it a useful ranch dog. The Sarplaninac is not a good choice for newer dog owners.
