General Appearance

The Schipperke is a healthy breed with an attractive double coat of black fur, perky ears, and a spitz-like tail, or no tail at all. Its coat is variable in length; it has a longer ruff around the neck, a line of longer fur down the back, and more hair on the back of its legs. This little dog measures 12 or 13 inches in height and weighs less than 20 pounds.

Temperament

The Schipperke has plenty of energy and has earned a reputation as a bit of troublemaker that commonly causes mischief. This breed is one of the most intelligent but it can be stubborn. It is an agile, athletic dog with very good health that excels as a watchdog. The Schipperke lives a very long time, often reaching 18 years of age.
