General Appearance

The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the Japanese breeds. It looks much like a miniature Akita. It is compact and muscular, has alert ears, a spitz tail, and a clean looking double coat with a reddish hue. The Shiba Inu stands 14 to 16 inches tall and weighs 17 to 23 pounds.

Temperament

This very proud dog is intelligent, bold, and fearless. It is alert and makes an outstanding watchdog. It does not believe it is a small dog, and it will stand up for itself, always. The Shiba Inu is extremely clean and housebreaks right away. This is a vocal dog and will make yodeling sounds when excited.

This breed can live just about anywhere. It is quite people-friendly and very good with kids. It is, however, a natural hunter and can pull a bird out of the air. It should be walked on leash and kept in a securely fenced yard. Early obedience training and socialization is essential for this independent breed. An improperly socialized Shiba is likely to be aggressive toward other dogs. This breed can be a challenge, and isn’t the best choice for a first dog.
