General Appearance

Most Coonhounds originate from the foxhound, but bred to track their prey on the ground and "tree" it". This involves staying at the tree and baying until the owner comes to retrieve their hounds. This particular breed of the Coonhound, the Treeing Walker, was developed for speed over the slower tracking hounds prevalent at the time. Walker hounds are mostly tri colored, however some bi-color can be found. Most popular colors are red/brown, black and white, hence making the Tri-color. Walker hounds are open backed, (white back with black or brown patches), blanketback which features the brown/red head, a black back going to the top of the legs and the white chest, stomach and legs. There is also what is called a saddleback which the black forms over the back like a saddle but more white is seen covering the outer parts of the back and legs. Ticking (small red/brown or black spots can be seen and is allowed in this breed. The Lone Pine breeding of the Treeing Walker Coonhound often has ticking on the chest and legs, and has a colder nose which means it can accurately follow a track a very long ways before treeing. It is much faster than most other of the coonhounds drawing in the Walker speed and tracking with its head in the air if on a "hotter" track.

Temperament

The tree walker coonhound is good with children, and gets along with other dogs. The tree walker coonhound is easily trained. They are primarily working and hunting dogs; however they do make good companions and thrive on consistent and ample affection. The tree walker Coonhound needs lots of exercise. Some say they are the best breed for coonhound field trials because of their speed, ability to locate quickly and good treeing ability. They are swift with a very good sense of smell and a distinctive howl. Socialize at a young age.
